Get to know the new OALEP.ca

Overview

On March 12, 2018 the new and improved OALEP.ca website launched. The site features many of the suggestions that members brought forward in the 2017 member survey. Below is a brief overview of our new website.

Logging On

To access the member’s only section of the website, you will need to log on with a new user name and password. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.oalep.ca and click on the register box in the sidebar.
  2. Email our webmaster with a request for a new password.
  3. Once you have received your password, use your email address as your user name and log on.
  4. Enjoy the member’s only section of the website!

Member Directory

The number one website feature that members have asked for is access to a member directory. This directory is now available and only needs the assistance of our members to populate it. Ensure your information is included by filling out your profile information. Reminders will go out a few times per year to ask you to verify your information. To encourage everyone to fill out their profile information, a draw will be held at the 2018 Spring Symposium for two $20 Tim Horton’s gift cards. Everyone with their profile information entered by Monday, May 7th will be eligible to win!

While the Member Directory is searchable by agency, job title and skill sets, query results cannot be downloaded. Potential solutions to this problem will be discussed at the Spring Symposium.

News & Resources

Another request by our members was a section for news and resources that members can access to stay on top of wider policing trends. News will be shared in a blog style format and all members are encouraged to submit articles of interest. At the 2018 Spring Symposium, we will be looking for volunteers to join a resource committee to assist with gathering materials to support those new to planning or looking for different ways of approaching planning challenges.

Partners

Feedback from our members has encouraged OALEP to create more formal partnerships with organizations such as the International Association of Law Enforcement Planners, the Canadian Society for Evidence Based Policing and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. As we develop these opportunities, you will find links to their websites on the Partners page.

Events

Another feature members requested is an Events page. The challenge with keeping this page relevant is finding out about events that our members would be interested in. If you know of an upcoming course, conference, webinar, seminar or other event that would support the professional development of OALEP members, let us know!

Our events page is connected to the Events section of the Blueprint with hyperlinks. By reaching nearly 200 OALEP members, OALEP can help advertise events being hosted by your Service. We have also been able to negotiate significant registration discounts by being a “marketing partner” for other organizations. If your Service is hosting an event and would like information shared on our website, please contact Communications Director Erin Vandahl.

Growth and Ways to Contribute

The website has been designed to support additional features and resources. There are lots of ways you can contribute to OALEP.ca and further develop the content of our website. If you have photos from a recent conference, a blog-style news article to share or are willing to help write a resource guide, please get in touch. Ideas, feedback and content can be sent to the OALEP Communications Director Erin Vandahl.
